For some reason I like that poor Bernd from the beginning. First, he was there because he fell in love with Carla. But later, after he learned about the nature of love Carla and Hanna's love, he was just simply supportive.
I have been playing with a few options why he was like that (since I haven't seen a lot of scenes about Bernd, I can't make the final judgement
)
1. He eventually learned he could never win Carla's heart, so he eventually accepted that fact but never really stopped adoring her - and his infatuation gradually grew into that illusion of being next to her but never having her (as long as his residence in the castle lasted), thus becoming her loyal friend.
2. He seems like the guy who never has had a meaningful purpose in his life. Living next to Carla, having all privileges of her family and what-a-woman to show up with, he accepted all those advantages - and found some sort of a friend in Carla, a friend that he had never had anyway!
3. Maybe he also has nothing but respect for Carla&Hanna's love, as we all did
, and when Hanna died, he was simply taken by Carla's grief.
4. Being the con, Bernd also knows, like many of them, to see and recognize and even have a huge, although silent respect for direct and non-manipulative people.
5. And maybe, a little bit of everything mentioned above.
;)
just my 2 cents ;)
