1. how did you find "verbotene liebe"?
I saw a video of Carla and Hanna on YouTube
2. when did you start watching it?
Right after I saw the video :) Hanna had died when I started watching so it was quite a few years ago
3. do you speak any german?
Only what I did in school at GCSE - so a little bit - that was many moons ago!!
4. do you understand any german?
See 3 :)
5. if you speak / understand only little german, do you never have problems with understanding the context?
I can pick up enough to have a very rough idea of what is happening but I would be lost without the translations
6. does VL help you to improve you german language skills?
Definately - I've even considered learning it properly - obsessed much :)

1)I ran into the Carla- VL vids, while i was doing Helen and Nikki, on You Tube.. oops sorry, I mean watching Bad Girls on You tube .
2) October 2008
3) I am learning it.. i am a beginner. i started with a German for Travelers course as a base, am selfteaching via VL and also grammar workbooks.
4) Very little, but improving through watching VL. Can understand words and simple sentences. I am not to the point of understanding or speaking full sentences.
5)yes, I miss the context, except when there is a steamy scene, then the words don't matter, lol. .
6) Yes, my vocabulary and basic inderstnading has grown immensely. I gauge my improvement by watching a movie like "Die Konkurrentin " online and generally guessing what per cent I can understand and compare the percentage improvement over several months . I think this is a good way because there are several ways of learning all going on at once:
a)Depth of learning is supposed to improve if learned in an emotional context, erm, which the Carla videos certainly are., lol!!!! .
b)listening to everyday German pronounced by German speakers helps me develop an ear for the language.
c)The subtitles allows me to associate written words and phrases with what I am hearing
d)The amount of time- at least an hour, 2 hours a day, often more listening , reading, pronouncing.
e)Belonging to the Claudia Hiersche forums further increases the exposure and adds the reading dimension.
f)If I have questions about words there are many very helpful german speakers and german learners willing to help out, both on the forums and You Tube

to anybody whose mother tongue is not german
