Taylor hat ihren 25. Geburtstag mit einem rauschenden Fest begangen. Viele ihrer FreundInnen aus dem Musikbusiness waren da, mit Fotos in den sozialen Netzwerken haben sich diesmal jedoch alle ziemlich zurückgehalten. Vielleicht wollte Taylor es so.

Unabhängig davon, ob Taylor und Karlie ein Paar sind oder nicht, finde ich diesen Artikel über eine sehr heteronormative Presse sehr interessant und zutreffend.

What Does Assuming Taylor Swift Isn’t Gay Say About Us?

Over the past week, speculation about Taylor Swift’s sexuality has been sweeping the Internet, mostly due to a particular photo that shows her maybe kissing model Karlie Kloss on a balcony. Up until then, other photos of the two being affectionate were merely brushed off as them being “BFFs.”

Most articles circulating on this topic ask, “Is Taylor Swift gay?” Others say that she may or may not be gay, and that it is none of our business either way.

However, what has been less examined is the treatment of the whole ordeal by most inquiring minds. Why were all the hand-holding photos and examples of affection no big deal up until now?

If Karlie Kloss was swapped out for a man in any of these photos, it’s unthinkable to imagine they would be captioned as simply best friends. Based on the way the media has over-speculated about all of Swift’s same-sex relationships, any one of these photos, with a man in Kloss’ place, would have “broken” the Internet.

Sitting court side at the Knicks game, for example, almost surely yields a new couple alert as far as heterosexuals are concerned.

And consider this quote in Rolling Stone, which caused little more than a ripple and collective “awww”: “Swift leads the way into one of her four guest bedrooms. ‘This is where Karlie usually stays,’ she says—meaning supermodel Karlie Kloss, one of her new BFFs, whom she met nine months ago at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. There’s a basket of Kloss’s favorite Whole Foods treats next to the bed, and multiple photos of her on the walls.”

Even now, after a the “kiss” photo, the public’s been quick to accept Swift’s denial. Maybe we’re so unwilling to consider that Taylor could be bisexual because she doesn’t fit a “typical” lesbian profile. She’s extremely feminine, has had known flings with many men, and came out of country music, a genre not known for being overly supportive to alternative lifestyles.

We’ve seen this dynamic play out in the past. Consider the case of Alicia Keys who, years ago, was suspected of being lesbian even though she was privately in a heterosexual relationship. Because she was a self-proclaimed “aggressive” woman with cornrows who kept mum about her personal life, she seemed to fit the narrative of a lesbian and was often viewed as such in spite of the fact that she was happily committed to a man.

On the verso is Taylor Swift, whose reps say she’s “happily single.” Despite strong evidence that could point to her being happily in a relationship with Kloss, the public tends to believe this feminine, soft-featured Southern belle.

More than highlight the sexual orientation of any particular celebrity, what the Taylor Swift-Karlie Kloss chatter is really doing is serving to show us the double-standard that still lingers about the way we judge relationships we see. If a woman and a man are affectionate, they must be dating. If two women are affectionate, especially if they both have a very feminine appearance, they must just be best friends.

Though being gay is becoming more commonly accepted in mainstream society, and though the concept of homosexuality is by no means new, we still have very elementary ways of viewing these relationships in our culture. There are masculine gay men and feminine lesbians, but many of us haven’t quite caught onto this yet.

Whether or not Taylor Swift likes women is none of our business. But just because she’s a dainty, feminine, former country singer doesn’t make it impossible. This isn’t meant to add to the speculation regarding Swift’s sexuality, but instead to point out the ways we often misjudge sexuality based simply on appearances.

Maybe it is time to examine the schemas that allow these types of judgements to flower. Maybe that’s a more worthwhile time expenditure than nitpicking the lives of people in the media in the first place.

naja, ganz funktioniert der Vergleich eben nicht, weil Frauen als "einfache" Freundinnen eben oft anders und sehr viel näher miteinander (zumindest in unserer Gesellschaft) umgehen, als z.B. gemischt-geschlechtliche einfache Freundschaften oder Männerfreundschaften.
Das verändert sich zwar z.T. gerade in spirituellen Kreisen, wo Männer da offener werden, aber es ist doch eher noch ungewöhnlich.

Mag sein. Es gibt aber schon einen Unterschied zwischen "Freundinnen" und "Freundinnen". Platonische Freundinnen schaut man nicht an, als wolle man sie gleich mit Haut und Haaren verschlingen, als sei man total verliebt - und diese Art von sexueller Chemie ist da auch eher unüblich. Irgendwas ist da zwischen ihnen, obwohl ich natürlich nicht weiß, was genau.

Ich sehe einen Unterschied zwischen Taylor mit z.B. Selena Gomez und Taylor mit Karlie. Mit Selena Gomez hat es auch nie solche Gerüchte gegeben, obwohl auch die beiden sich sehr sehr nah sind. Vielleicht sind bzw. waren Taylor und Karlie ja bisher auch deshalb so unbekümmert in der Öffentlichkeit, weil sie nicht "befürchten" mussten, als mehr gesehen zu werden als als BFFs, einfach weil Menschen in der Öffentlichkeit sehr oft durch die heteronormative Brille betrachtet werden, wie der obige Artikel es beschreibt. Diese Art von Vorurteil kann im Gegenzug auch für eigene Zwecke instrumentalisiert werden. Möglicherweise sind sie ja jetzt, wo die Öffentlichkeit aufmerksam geworden ist, nicht mehr so offen. Ich denke, vor diesen Schlagzeilen hätte es von der Geburtstagsparty durchaus andere Bilder gegeben. Ich glaube auch, dass der Tweet "Stop accusing my friends of dating me" nicht zufällig einen Tag vor der Ausstrahlung der Victoria's Angels Fashion Show gepostet wurde, weil man sich im Lager Swift angesichts der Bilder vermutlich denken konnte, was das geneigte Fernsehpublikum für Rückschlüsse ziehen würde.

Was bei aller Spekulation aber außer Diskussion steht, ist dass Taylor einen echten Schlag bei Frauen hat, was Lordes Geburtstagsgruß oben und auch dieser neue Beitrag zeigt:

Was ich interessant finde, das ist, wie Taylor Karlie ihren treuen Fans mit und mit vorstellt, bei den Secret Sessions in New York ist Karlie ja auch urplötzlich in Taylors Apartment aufgetaucht (wo sie ja angeblich und gerüchteweise sogar wohnt ) und Taylor hat sie den Fans dort vorgestellt. Viele hatten davon auf Tumblr berichtet - auch dass das Apartment voller Fotos ist von den beiden, große gerahmte Fotografien vom Road Trip.

Ok, Ohnmächtig ist Tori beim Auspacken nicht geworden, aber sie ist trotzdem fast gestorben - verständlich.
Weiß nicht, aber irgendwie hat Taylor ein bisschen was von Ellen DeGeneres (ok, die zwei verstehen sich auch sehr sehr gut).

Ich bin wirklich gespannt, wie lange das noch so weiter geht mit den beiden Damen, bzw. was da noch alles kommt und was über die beiden geschrieben wird.
Eine normale Frauen-Freundschaft ist das in meinen Augen auch nicht mehr. Anfangs dacht ich einfach immer "Joa mei. Beste Freundinnen eben...", aber inzwischen.. na na na
